-Deja-
It appears as if Deja is receiving her education in the least restrictive environment because, her scores have not only improved, but her classroom teachers push her to do better. If she needs legitimate help with the question, a teacher is willing to assist her, but if the teacher feels that is capable of answering it herself, Deja is expected to do so. She personally believes that it is fair, because she knows that as a student she must become more independent. In addition, she is able to remain in a general education classroom with her peers, while also becoming stronger in the subjects that she was struggling with.
-Sean-
After watching the video, it definitely does appear that the current plan for Sean is working out the best. His mother is concerned that if he is pulled out of the classroom, he will lose the social interaction that is a crucial part of his development. The speech pathologist has been doing "untraditional" techniques and has been going with him to lunch bunch, and other activities throughout the day. She is able to see how he functions in a normal environment, and is even able to work with on different words that may carry through to different environments. The therapist did state that too many activities at once can be overwhelming for Sean, so it is important to keep him on a routine, but a routine that seems to benefit him the most.
-IEP-
Whether or not a person is an educator, parent, or simply a bystander during the IEP meeting, it is important to remember one thing, and that is that the meeting is about the particular student. The video mentioned Shaun, that while he did not say anything at the meeting, it was still important that he was present, so that everyone was able to remember why they were there. The IEP helps students become contributing members of society, and helps these students form relationships with people within their community, and without the IEP, it may be possible that this would not happen.
The video also goes on to mention that a goal for Sean is being to live on his own, but first he must be able to learn how to buy groceries, have money, etc. This is an important functional IEP goal for him as he moves from childhood into adulthood.
